Does Making Tax Digital Apply to You?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is being introduced gradually by HMRC and applies to sole traders and landlords. The date you must register depends on your annual combined turnover from both self-employment and property income:

  • £50,000 – April 2026

  • £30,000 – April 2027

  • £20,000 – April 2028

Your registration requirement will be based on the figures reported in your 2024/25 tax return.

You can also voluntarily register early for MTD if you wish to take advantage of digital record-keeping sooner. However, once registered, you’ll be required to follow the same obligations as those mandated by HMRC. The government is still reviewing whether smaller businesses with a turnover below £20,000 will be included in the future. For the latest updates, check the HMRC guidance.

MTD for Landlords

Are you a landlord feeling uncertain about the transition to Making Tax Digital (MTD) and how it might affect your property income? You’re not alone! We understand that digital record-keeping can seem daunting at first, which is why we’ve created a dedicated Landlord’s Guide to MTD — complete with answers to frequently asked questions and practical tips designed specifically for your sector. Visit our blog to explore our MTD for Landlords FAQs and learn how to make the move to digital tax reporting simple and stress-free.

What Will Change with MTD?

Making Tax Digital transforms the way you report your taxes to HMRC. You’ll be required to use approved digital accounting software — spreadsheets will no longer be accepted. Key changes include:

  • Quarterly submissions to HMRC plus a final end-of-year return.

  • Digital record keeping for all income and expenses.

  • Filing through MTD-compatible software to ensure compliance.

This new system is designed to make tax management more efficient, accurate, and transparent — helping you stay compliant with less stress.
